I just dropped Brandi off at the airport & for the first time since we've been living here we're going back to our families for Christmas & will hopefully come back rejuvenated & ready to keep on pushing through until we make our mark in the industry.
This week I got to hang out extensively with both of my bosses & met some great people & got to witness fun industry things. I'm privy to eavesdropping on tons of different conversations between agents, producers, writers, actors, directors, etc every single day & love it. I'll admit I get jealous & anxious because I don't feel like I'm IN that world yet. I feel like I'm just on the outskirts of it & I am itching like crazy to be creative for a living.
Here are a couple of things that happened that really got me thinking:
***I hung out with Car, Dustin, & their friend Kym Whitley (Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Perfect Man, Next Friday) & she spent about an hour giving us all the details on this series of auditions she went on with a movie starring Helen Mirren that's in production. Hearing her talk about decisions that she made as an actor & the confidence she got from just not caring & then hearing about all of the technical sides of it as far as residuals & credits go I just felt excluded & a bit hopeless because these people are ten times more brilliant, cool, & funny as I could ever hope to be.***
***Yesterday while driving through West Hollywood I saw an ad for Sweeney Todd on the side of a building...a huge building..the ad (Johnny Depp's face) was covering the whole thing. Literally. The whole damn building was Johnny Depp's face. It was disconcerting but made me wish I was working IN the industry so that I could express my opinion on the film & have it matter.
***It's been raining like crazy for the past couple of days here. Yesterday I was stuck at a light on Hollywood Blvd. for about 6 minutes because of traffic & had my Atonement soundtrack playing in the car. During those 6 minutes I witnessed a guy walking in the rain with a grocery bag slung over his shoulder & a 2 liter bottle of coke was about to fall out, another guy was holding half of an umbrella (it was literally destroyed) over his head in an attempt to stay dry, there was also a woman who literally shoved her hand into a garbage can to dig out cans, & then there was a woman with a huge cleaning cart who was trying to hold onto her 3 kids while crossing the street at the last minute in the rain. After seeing all that I realized that I've come into a bit of a rut here in LA. I want to progress. I want to be a part of the conversations that talk about Nia Vardalos directing a movie or getting Playtone to fund it. I want my actory friend to come over & talk about auditions & then pitch ideas randomly throughout the day about story ideas. Creativity is my favorite thing in the world & it IS possible to have it as my job but I have got to get actual progress going on my own stuff so that I can pitch it to whoever when it's ready.
***My boss made it her mission this week to find me a "cute boy." My top candidates were Ryan the hot carpet guy from Beverly Hills Carpet Cleaners, the PAs for the McDonalds commercial being filmed outside today (more on that later), & Wentworth Miller (which was hysterical.)
Ryan the hot carpet guy from Beverly Hills Carpet Cleaners: It was like a scene out of Desperate Housewives...which I've never seen but this is what I imagine it is like...I call the carpet cleaners to come pick up carpets & I open the door & this 6 foot tall, tanned, dark hair, stunning blue eyed boy is on the doorstep...in a carpet cleaners uniform. So I literally sat down & watched him carry rugs into the truck & then he left...ne'er to be seen again..
PAs for McDonalds commercial: McDonalds is filming a commercial outside of where I work. I got there this morning & two PAs blocked my way. They said I couldn't go past them because they were filming & I said,"I work in that house" & they were like,"blah blah blah" & it annoyed me until I was forced to be rude & they let me pass.
Wentworth Miller: Tonight we decided to have a production party by Dustin, Caroline, & I walking to Starbucks in the village. So we were in Starbucks & are making our orders when I see C talking to a guy standing behind her. He was wearing a ski cap & had gorgeous eyes & a really beautiful smile & I was laughing because I thought he was a fan. Apparently she knew his mother or something & then pulls me next to her & says,"This is my assistant Laura..." with a huge grin on her face & we stood around & talked for a bit & then it was time to go because a line had formed behind us at the counter. Ahahahhahah when we walked out I mouthed,"Who was that?" & she looked at me & said,"Don't you watch PRISON BREAK!?!?" "Um...no..but..omg!" "You need to. It's a great show. But seriously, Wentworth is just beautiful isn't he?"
So what that means is that I have to start watching Prison Break because Wentworth Miller is a soft spoken, shy guy who is tall & adorable & contrary to popular belief does not speak with an English accent.
Anyways, THAT incident made me smile simply because I had no idea I was talking to an actor & would actually never have pegged him as an actor just because his personality was so sweet.
A few other things happened that made my mind reel with glee but that'll be saved for my journal.
So to wrap it all up (& I'll post a comprehensive blog of resolutions after the new year) I am probably going to have to get a second job & will also have to start seriously getting to work on all of the ideas I have to write about. Considering I'll be between airports & flying from 11:30am-10pm (+ 3 hours because of the time difference) tomorrow I will have time to start then. :)
With that said, I hope you all have a WONDERFUL Christmas & should definitely spend the extra money getting a fabulous sentimental present for someone especially if it means something. Be really nice to each other & don't make a holiday into a bad memory by screwing up on Christmas. It's so not worth it. Make sure you have a good winter coat. It gets cold even in SoCal. :)
